Returning a protected structure to a family home with a modern extension.
The house, a protected structure built in 1911, was converted to offices in the early 1990s and had a 3-storey extension added to the rear. This conversion denuded the house of much of its original character, and the location of the extension, central on plan, removed natural light from the main staircase and failed to address the rear garden in any way (this was also covered in tarmac and used as a car-park). Our clients wish to return the property to its former glory whilst also providing for modern, family living standards.
Our design approach has been to strip back the rear 90s extension and create a modern intervention, which will open up the house once more to natural light. Significant upgrading of the thermal performance of the old, mass-concrete walls is proposed, through various sustainable measures including integrated heat exchange units, solar panels and replacement of glazing (whilst retaining the original timber sash windows).
